Day 4 - Old City and Tomb of David |
| Posted by () on Jan 31 2009 |

From sundown yesterday to sundown today was the Sabbath. It was really more like noon yesterday til tomorrow morning. All the Jewish owned stores are closed. You are not allowed to do any work on the Sabbath. That includes pushing the button for your floor on the elevator. One elevator is designated the Sabbath elevator and is put in Sabbath mode. That means that it continuously goes up and down stopping at every floor so that you can get on and off without pushing the button. The blue light indicates which elevator is in Sabbath mode. You are also not allowed to create fire on the Sabbath. So dinner last night and breakfast this morning were both stone cold. In ancient times to maintain a fire in their lamps, they would use an eggshell with a pin hole in it, filled with oil and perched on top of the lamp to supply extra oil to make it through the Sabbath.

This is a tomb from the King David era(Absalom's Tomb). It is on the opposite side of the Kidron Valley from the Old City. King David was the only one allowed to have a tomb on the city side of the Kidron Valley.

Here is another tomb from the same time period next to the previous one(Zechariah).

This shows an upper room above a tomb. The upper room was used for the living to come and honor the dead without desacrating the tomb.

Yesterday we saw the Eastern Gate. But that was the Eastern Gate built by the Crusaders. This is the Eastern Gate (sealed up now) from the time of King David.

Ancient olive trees at The Church of All Nations. Some of these are over 2000 years old.

We entered the Old City through the Lion's Gate.

Here are the lions. There is a set of these on each side of the gate.

After entering the Old City, we visited a nunnery that was built by the Crusaders. This is the first example of the Gothic stone architecture that the Crusaders brought back to Medieval Europe. They had to build from stone in Jerusalem because there was no wood to use.

After an overwhelming trek through the Muslim quarter for lunch, we went to The Garden Tomb. This is the skull in the rocks at Golgotha.

Here is a closeup.

We left the city and went to the excavation of a tomb on the city side of the Kidron Valley from the King David era. It is huge by comparision to other other tombs of the time period. Based on it's size and location, on the city side of the Kidron Valley, it is believed that this is the Tomb of King David.

This is the remains of the upper room at the King David Tomb site. What you see is not steps but rather seating. These seats would have been arrayed on three sides of the room. Since Jesus was from the line of King David, it is believed that this is THE Upper Room where Jesus and his Disciples had The Last Supper. They were celebrating Passover and it would have been appropriate to use one of these upper rooms for that occasion. Of course the real reason for the meal is why Easter is at the same time as Passover.
